Podcasting on the go. It’s done all the time. Be it at a con or a sporting event, you will find podcasts and live events all over the place. Here is how I personally set up for mobile podcasting.
Zoom to the rescue!
Zoom is a Japanese company that has been making musical effects, processing, and recording equipment for over 20 years! What I personally find amazing is that almost all of their products are low in cost and mostly plastic and for most manufacturers, you would think that means crappy products that break quickly and don’t work well but it’s exactly the opposite with them! I have had a “Stomp Peddle” for over 18 years and believe me, I have kicked the crap out of it and it works perfectly to this day!
They have a new line of “Field Recording” products that I have got to check out! Until then, I have been using and will continue to use the Zoom H5 Handy Recorder for all remote recording that is outside of my studio.
So I have an ATR-2100 microphone for my primary recording.
I connect it with a standard XLR cable to channel 1 and I have a 2nd mic hooked into channel 2.
I also have a set of Bose Quiet Comfort 15’s (QC15) that are not made anymore but I have always loved the quality of Bose’s headphones and frequency range.
Now the H5 will only take a 32Gb SD card max, but that’s not really an issue. That is close to 600hrs of audio in mp3 format!
I don’t make any other customizations of changes to the H5. I plug in, hand over Mic 2 and hit record! The only thing I would warn against is not to go over Gain setting 3 on either channel. Anything higher than that seems to pick up all kinds of noise and will be harder to clean later on.
