The Basics of Social Media Marketing for Your Podcast

So one of the most requested and misunderstood aspects of podcasting is how to promote and market it to the right people. This also means finding the right market to broadcast in. A lot of people ask, which social media platform should I post on? Good question, the answer, where is your audience?

Finding your audience’s home

First things first. You should be a fan of the content you are producing. Not necessarily your specific content but if you like talking about music, I would hope you listen to other music podcasts and radio shows that are out there. Don’t have a show about sales but have no clue who Grant Cardone is.

That being said; Where would you go as a fan of the content. If there aren’t really any Facebook groups for the content you want to produce then don’t post the bulk of your outreach there. It will just be a waste of time. So what platforms are good for what content:

Twitter

Twitter is great for just shouting into a large space. You tend to find people that casually look for specific topics. Once you gain some followers, you can get some good outreach but expect it to take some time. Twitter is all over the place but blog content and images do well there. You can try to promote services or just get someone to follow a lead but going for a cold sale will be near impossible.

Facebook

Facebook has a good reach across the board. Organic growth can be tough but they do have an advertising platform that can get you to the right people. Almost anything can work on facebook but you really have to think about your engagement and how you interact. While Twitter will work for blanket posts, something like that will get lost on Facebook. You need to be a person and really focus on your relationships and the value you bring to people on the platform.

Instagram

This is the new up and comer in the ad space. You can promote content on here (for now) and get pretty good engagement. You should have content that lends it’s self to some kind of picture or short video, but you can get to people directly right now with no issues.

Pinterest

This one seems to be passed by a lot of people but for the right niche, it can become a huge source of traffic. Pinterest does really well for the craft and hobby space but really if you have any content that helps someone grow, lessons, recipes, or even product art you can quickly grow a following here.

Youtube

This video powerhouse is quickly becoming the place to learn. While there are still a ton of cat videos, you can learn everything from how to change the breaks on your car, how to solder copper pipe, how to play a specific song, even how to podcast!

Snapchat and LinkedIn

These platforms, while strong in their own right may or may not be the best option to try and bring awareness to your content. Snapchat is not the best for discovery so you have a need for people to directly share your content with the people they know.

LinkedIn is great for business related topics but you really need to push good articles there.

 

So overall, you need to make your own choice on where to promote. I will follow up with automation tools in the future.
